In the previous article of We the old people was mentioned the health problem, we continue with another important one.
Economic resources of we the old people
The second problem of Older Adults is the level of income and economic well-being, since most of these individuals no longer work and need some kind of financial help.
In developed countries, this population group is generally granted a pension system and medical insurance services.
Despite this, many older people, mostly women and members of ethnic groups, live practically at a considerable level of poverty.
Not everyone has a family that can provide a comfortable economic security and also it is necessary to take into account the level of expenses that are associated with the treatment of diseases and “ailments” typical of that stage of life.
Personality in the elderly
Referring to the issue of Personality in the Elderly, it is important to point out the main needs that are recognized at this age. According to Teresa Orosa (1999), 4 are fundamentally identified:
- The need for communication.
- Need for transcendence. There is also a need for the transmission of experience,
- and of course the need for self-affirmation.
At present, the study of the Third Age is not only aimed at pointing out the negative aspects and losses of this stage, but is also directed towards new possibilities and the achievement of a state of well-being and personal satisfaction.
This trend has been called Satisfactory Aging, Successful Aging or Competent Aging.
This state of satisfaction has little to do with the age of the individual and helps eliminate the negative vision that has historically been assigned to aging.
We will continue to address the issue in upcoming installments of We the Old people…
